It is that fun and exciting time of year again when you either go trick or treatin’ or prepare to host a bunch of trick or treaters who will shortly be knocking on your door. If you're planning a Halloween party of some sort or just want to get your home all decked up for the holiday then we have ideas and products that are sure to delight you. Plus there is special October coupon for you in there

DIY Halloween Decorations And Ideas

You can print out scary posters and images to put up on walls and in the bathroom and so on! Print out darkly looming silhouettes of an evil grinning cat, a scary ghost, a fanged vampire, bats or witchy talons. To this you could add suitable text: ‘Beware! They are Coming’ or ‘Frankenstein Needs a New Brain’, etc. Or even this one: ‘WANTED! DEAD OR ALIVE ‘(with a picture of the host or a guest).

You could create custom Halloween themed t shirts for yourself and for your guests to really get into the ‘spirit’ of things! Similar spooky themes and text as the posters can be used for these as well. If you're having a party this could be a special give away!

You can also create other Halloween themed printables: masks, place cards, table décor, banners, flags, or streamers. Halloween chalkboard printables, tree décor and favor boxes are some more items you may want to DIY. Get some great ideas from this Free Halloween Printables page on Pinterest: cutouts, posters, wall décor, tags, candle wrappers, treat boxes and more.

And how about some of these décor ideas:
  • Use discarded toilet rolls, cut out scary eye shapes and in insert lights.
  • Spider or bat cutouts hanging down from the ceiling in unexpected places.
  • A garland or banner of little ghostie cutouts.
  • Cutouts to make your front door look like Frankenstein’s head.

Zine Festival Image Via BrooklynZineFest
Have you ever desired to create something from start to finish, completely independent from the influence of others? To experience a sense of self accomplishment and expression upon completion of such a task can be a much needed treat for the human soul. For many of us, this excitement is lost to our childhood and our individual voices are drowned out by a modern society that values uniformity. Luckily, there is an outlet for such work to be shown off and appreciated solely for its existence, that outlet is Zine creation.

What is a Zine?

There are no strict rules for what a zine is or has the potential to be. Zines are usually booklets of images and words that are self-publicized and printed. They can be  either sold at independent book stores, online, or displayed at local zine festivals for sale. Nobody expects to make much profit off of their zines. It is more about expression and exposure. So what can a zine be about? Anything and everything that exists can make for great zine material. Make a zine about childhood fantasies, radio waves or fashion. Zines are excellent for small collections of poems or a silly comic. You could even make a zine about nothing. It’s a pure and raw manifestation of expression and personal thought.  After making one and putting it out there, you will be surprised with how connected you feel with your authentic self.

How do you make a zine?

There are many ways to make a zine and no reason why you shouldn’t. All mediums are acceptable. Zines can be digitally created and published on a website. They are sometimes made of photo copied doodles and snapshots. You can draw a picture, scan it into the computer, digitally color it and compile it with other images then print it. Once the pages are printed, there are many ways to put them together. But, if you aren’t familiar with book binding techniques, you might want to start with this template:
http://blog.umamidesign.com/ud-content/2013/09/ud_130918_zine-instructions.jpg

With this template, you can create a zine using only one sheet of paper. Go ahead and follow the instructions to create the booklet. Once you have done that you can plan out your zine content on each page. When you have all the pages filled out, unfold it. You will then use a scanner to create an image of your creation. After the image has been taken, you may print off as many as your print head can handle.

How can I market myself?

Showcasing your zines (Image via PublicBroadCasting)
Great job! You have made a zine and are ready to sign up for your local Zine Fest, you Zinester. To find a zine festival closest to you, try Googling it. If that doesn’t work, you may try this site which has some major zine events posted here.

Some “Zinesters” will even create supplemental print items to accompany their zines as an added bonus. I have seen stickers, t-shirts, pins, magnets, post cards and posters!  These are fun items to have at your booth for trading with other creators or giving out to fans. Creating your own T-shirts is easy with our Premium T-shirt Iron-on Transfers for Inkjet Printer papers. You just print an image out using any inkjet printer and iron it right onto the shirt. Magnets are great for throwing in with purchases or using to trade other artists for their extras. Our Glossy Printable Magnet Sheets are a great product to use for creating these fun and timeless trinkets.

We have created an exclusive Zine Starter Pack that is available on CompAndSave.com. It will include a 15% off discount if you purchase any of these items: white/light premium t-shirt iron-transfers (8.5x11) - 20 sheets, dark/black premium t-shirt iron-on transfers (8.5x11) - 20 sheets, or white premium glossy printable magnet sheets (8.5"x11") - 10 sheets.

As so many of our readers know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month and we are proud to go pink all this month as well. We are partnering with the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® (NBCF) to help their organization raise awareness and spread information about breast cancer prevention. We bring our readers some important messages about cancer symptoms, early detection and cancer survival.

Early Symptoms of Cancer You Should Know About

The earliest symptom of breast cancer is usually a lump or change in the skin or tissue of the breast. Though it is important to remember that not all lumps or changes indicate breast cancer, it is best never to ignore anything that you feel is unusual. Some of the most common early symptoms for early detection of breast cancer include:
  • Any tenderness, lump, or thickening of not only the breast and nipple area, but also the underarm could be a symptom.
  • Larger than usual pores (what is sometimes referred to as the orange peel effect) could also be a warning sign
  • Any change in appearance, feel, size or shape – any new swelling, shrinking, hardening or asymmetry of the breast (asymmetry itself if not a symptom, because many women have one breast that is bigger than the other, but if you notice a change, that could be a problem)
  • Any dimpling, inversion, redness, scaling or swelling of the areola or nipple
  • Any unusual discharge; clear or bloody should be investigated. Even milky discharge (at any time other than when a woman is breastfeeding) should be checked out

Do you have an early detection plan?

Many times, when you do notice symptoms, they may be entirely benign and they may be nothing for you to worry about. On the other hand, cancer can creep up on a person completely undetected; showing no noticeable signs of symptoms.

According to estimates, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her life.  As we all know, early detection gives one the best chance at cancer survival. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early in the localized stage, the five year relative survival rate is 100%.

So it is important for each woman to have an Early Detection Plan. Regular self exams, scheduling regular visits to the doctor, clinical exams and having mammograms or other imaging tests at the frequency recommended is the first line of defense against breast cancer.

Visit earlydetectionplan.org to create your own Early Detection Plan. Receive reminders to do breast self-exams, and schedule your clinical breast exams and mammograms based on your age and health history. You will also find out about your risk factors; know more about signs and symptoms, and also find instructions on how and when to perform a breast self-exam. You can create the plan online or download the app for Apple Device or your Android Device.

Join Us to Ink the World Pink This October!

Easy Ways to Recycle Printer Cartridges for Adults
Regular readers will have read about our ongoing Food for the Poor program (FFTP); our way of recycling and turning your empty ink and toner cartridges  into a full stomach! To recap, we at CompAndSave are collecting empty ink and toner cartridges by asking that you mail cartridge donations to our headquarters in Newark, California which are then sent on to GreenHippo.com, an e-waste recycling company located in LA, CA. 100% of the proceeds received from GreenHippo.com are pledged to the Food for the Poor Non-Profit Organization which helps feed the hungry and house the homeless. You can also visit our dedicated Champions Page for direct donations.

Why and How You Can Help

We all know that e-waste is a serious problem and that we need to do all we can to minimize the amount of e-waste that ends up in landfills (because in spite of estimates and postulations, no one really knows how long it takes for plastics to biodegrade). If you're already carrying your own reusable bag to the store each time you go grocery shopping good for you! Here are simple life hacks on how to recycle and make a difference:

  1. Recycle newspapers; use them as creative gift wrap
  2. Use both sides of paper for printing; don’t print unless necessary
  3. Replace regular bulbs with LEDs
  4. Ditch bottled water; carry your own flask (or coffee cup)
  5. Take a shorter shower; or (more fun) share a shower!
  6. Reuse. It makes economic and environmental sense to use pre-owned item
  7. Plant a tree
  8. Tune your car engine and learn to drive fuel efficiently
  9. Adjust your thermostat; switch off appliances when not in use
  10. Cycle or walk, telecommute, use an electric vehicle – reduce use of gas
  11. Pay bills online, make payments online instead of issuing checks, ask for e-statements
  12. Buy local, seasonal produce that isn’t carted over long distances or artificially ripened
Another way to recycle is of course, responsibly disposing of your used ink and toner cartridges. So next time, instead of tossing those empty cases into the trash, toss them into an envelope and send them to us and we’ll do the rest – we will ensure that they are disposed of responsibly and also that a hungry kid somewhere is fed – it really is that simple. And you have the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve done your bit to reduce pollution and feed the hungry in one fell swoop!

How to Get More People Involved in Recycling

person holding a recycling bin
Image from: industrialrecyclersms.com
Now that you’ve decided to ensure that no more of your used cartridges end up in landfills, wouldn’t you like to get more people on board? Here are some tips to popularize our printer cartridge reycling program with others:
  • Gather your colleagues together on your lunch break and briefly talk about recycling ink and toner cartridges. Invite your office mates to mail us their used cartridges or create a collective where used office cartridges and those of others can be mailed to us all together.
  • At your next Tupperware party, take a minute to highlight the benefits of our recycling program that helps out the Food For the Poor Non-Profit
  • The next time you get friends together for a barbecue, mention the ease with which you can all help reduce e-waste to get more people on board
  • When your book club meets next, make a mention of this as well
  • Make a mention of this cause in a Whatapp group that you may be a part of
Start by mentioned the life hacks mentioned above and go on to speak about our recycling program. Perhaps you could print out our Champions for the Poor page to hand around so that the idea stays with your friends, acquaintances and colleagues. Or you could do the really environment friendly thing and email them our Printer Cartridge Recycling Program Page  even perhaps forward it to them via Whatsapp. You could share our recycling page via your Facebook or Twitter pages. The more the word gets around, the better the response will be.

We are happy to receive as many cartridges as possible from you and we are happy to do the recycling for you. Help us in reaching our 10,000 cartridge goal by shipping all your used cartridges to us at –

fun gallery wall ideas
Your home is a very personal space; it is your showpiece in a sense. Your décor says a lot about your likes, interests, experiences and perhaps even your sense of humor! You can easily create a gallery wall; an effective conversation starter. Add wall decals, canvas art, art prints and more that reflect your personality. Use family photos, inspirational quotes, abstract or landscape art, funny quips and even your favorite cartoons or comic strips!

How to start your DIY Gallery Wall

Identify a space such as the entryway to your home, a space in your living room or a large enough wall space in your dining room. The side of the stairs or an outdoor space where you entertain could work well for your DIY wall décor project too. Below is a video for inspiration as well.

To begin, checkout your attic or storage space: there may be interesting old family pictures, a painting, a sketch by a family member, or even letters of significance that may be worth framing.
How about the hotel bill from your distant but memorable honeymoon or perhaps your old wedding invite? Your child or grandchild’s first clothing, a pair of shoes or christening dress; even the license plate of your first ever car could also make some unusual but meaningful wall art.  The first ever greeting your child made you, or the ‘painting’ of grandma that your  granddaughter made – these are highly frame-worthy as well!

Check out flea markets or resale shops for hidden treasures that you may be able to pick up for an authentic touch. Look for art prints, pop art frames, landscapes, still life or whatever appeals to your eclectic sensibilities.

DIY Wall Decals and Canvas Art

There is a lot you can do using your home printer to create that really personal gallery wall for your home:
  1. Print pictures of kids and grandkids. Think special occasions, family get-togethers, holidays, weddings or just some of their most adorable expressions; photos that mean something to you just because!
  2. Create collages using multiple photos, touch up photos, create monochrome or sepia prints or even get that pop art look. Online editing tools such as Picmonkey can be very useful for this.
  3. If there is a speech or poem you find particularly inspiring, print this out in an artsy font of your choice. Take the lyrics of a song that is special to you and print that out. But ensure that the font is clear and the size is large enough to be legible.
  4. Do the same with inspirational quotes, funny idioms or sayings or a memorable trademarks of a friend or family member.
  5. Scour the web for cartoons, funnies and comic strips that amuse or are significant for nostalgic reasons. Print out what you need (be sure to check that the website does not forbid this expressly for copyright reasons though)(im not sure that warning this matters, since its for personal use and not being published).
  6. Check out abstract art, classic art, landscapes and still life online as well. It doesn’t have to be a painting by a master; choosing something that pleases you (color schemes, scenes, or anything that appeals) is more important if you're trying to bring more of your personality to your wall décor
  7. You can also take printouts of stunning photos that you have taken yourself or which photographers have shared on the net: great buildings or historical monuments from unusual angles, a great sunset, a snarling, big cat, a canine in repose, a stark cityscape, pictures of indigenous folk all over the world; it could be anything that strikes your fancy really…
Check out some more of these ideas on Pinterest on our Printables Board and some more ideas for that gallery wall project of yours.

recycle ink and toner cartridges at school"If you want parents to recycle, just tell their kids the importance of recycling, and they'll be all over it." - Bill Nye

Reuse. Reduce. Recycle. We'll often find these words on the front of a little green bin urging us to recycle. Often it'll be paper, cardboard boxes, water bottles and other similar items. What people often forget about though, is that their printer's cartridges can also be recycled! While you can't just through it the bin, you can send off your empty ink and toner cartridges to local recycling centers or online shops like GreenHippo.com.

That's why we are glad to announce our ink and toner recycling program. All proceeds go to support the non-profit, Food For the Poor after we send off the cartridges to GreenHippo.com. No matter if its through your home printer or even school's printer. With the Back-to-School season in full swing, it would be a great idea to get schools and classmates involved. Here's how below:

Some Recycling Facts First

By choosing to recycle, we are choosing to make a difference. Reusing items prevents landfills from overflowing and reduces the negative effects of waste incineration. We can optimize our resources and cut back on pollution by recycling. Plus, recycling has great personal and community benefits!

Recycling initiatives at the community level, have a dual positive impact. They involve more people and increase the total volume of recycled items. These initiatives serve to increase overall awareness about the importance of recycling and practically educate people about to recycle. Such initiatives could result in recycling becoming almost a habit with people of the community – a norm rather than an exception!

If you recycle already, you may have known that already. Here are some other recycling facts:
  • Each of us generates about 4 pounds of trash in a day (that's 1.5 tons of garbage a year)
  • It is estimated that about 75% of that waste is recyclable, but only 30% of it actually gets recycled.
  • The United States generates 21.5 million tons of food waste, most of which is not composted. If that waste were composted, it could contribute to lowering greenhouse gases around the amount of 2 million cars.
  • Approximately 9,000 community curbside recycling programs exist in the United States

About Our Food for the Poor Program

Regular readers already know about our ongoing recycling program to support Food for the Poor. If you're new, our program helps the hungry by recycling used ink and toner cartridges. Via this program you have been mailing us your empty printer ink and toner cartridges which we collect together and send GreenHippo.com, who pays for these cartridges. In turn, the money we collect from this recycling program goes to FoodForThePoor.org, a nonprofit devoted to feeding the hungry.

How to Recycle Printer Cartridges in Your School

As a student you can help to mobilize the student body to do something positive for the environment by sending their ink and toner cartridges to CompAndSave.com. You would need to clear this with the school authorities or custodial staff. You could explain the dual benefit of helping the school reduce disposal costs of toner and ink cartridges and of helping the needy via the program. Involve not just the students, but also the administrative and teaching staff of the school in the program. Hey, if maybe even parents might want to get involved!

You just have to collect the empty printer cartridges and mail them to us at:

 CompAndSave
Attn: Cartridge Donations
38929 Cherry St.
Newark, California 94560

We'll make sure that the toner and ink cartridges you send us are sent off GreenHippo.com. From there, they pay us and we send 100% of the proceeds to Food For the Poor.

When you initiate a recycling program in your school or college, we would love to hear all about it. Do share on our Facebookpage or in the comments section below.

Best Online It is that time of year again, when kids return to school, albeit reluctantly. Parents can sometimes feel relieved their kids are going back to a predictable and productive schedule. Happy not to hear their kids or grand-kids saying, " I'm bored!". It is also the time of year when there is school shopping to take care of and other challenges. Here are some tips for shopping back to school supplies:

Pointers for Back to School Shopping

If you're kid is anything like most, they usually aren't excited about August rolling around. Parents usually have to motivate their kids to get into the back to school frame of mind. One idea you could try out is to involve kids in the shopping which could spark some enthusiasm.

For school supplies, online shopping may be the best bet. Not only do you get better deals, you don’t have to battle the hordes at the stores!  Also, you don't have to carry around heavy  books, stationery, and clothing home because everything is conveniently delivered for you.

Tips for Back To School Shopping

  1. Make a list of things you really need, avoid impulse purchases, check online buzz, compare prices and take advantage of sales.
  2. Download mobile apps to shop online stores. In-app purchases often offer exclusive extra discounts so you get better deals.
  3. Don’t junk promotional emails without checking them. You could miss special coupons or limited period sales.
  4. Sign up for newsletters and so on.  Online stores generally offer you extra discounts for doing this.
  5. Check for good deals in other departments, such as Office Supplies. Very often you will find the same stuff here that you would for school: stationery, paper, files, folders, electronics and more.
  6. Be sure to check with your favorite online stores to see special deals for this time of year. CompAndSave.com also has a deal for you, more about that later.
  7. Is your state offering a tax holiday weekend? Check and take advantage of this.

Best Online Stores for Back-to-School Shopping

We have your back this August. Here are some great and diverse online sites for shopping office and school supplies.

  1. Target is a good choice because it’s a one stop shop for all your school needs. You could get up to 50% off supplies such as backpacks and stationer, 20% off uniforms and so on.
  2. Walmart back to school supplies let you browse by grade and tell you what the top choices are for college students. There are clothes, electronics, stationery, books and more to choose from.
  3. Staples also has an extensive selection of products that your kids may need as they head back for another term.
For new school clothing that you need to buy, you could check out sample sites that offer multiple daily sales. Online stores such as Zulily and Gilt and several others are known to offer amazing deals daily.

Rather than buy new books, check text book resale or exchange websites. Text books can be prohibitively expensive and few students will use them beyond exam day. AbeBooks lets you locate all sorts of books, both new and used. BookFinder helps you find cheap books, out of print books and lets you compare prices from 100,000 booksellers.

For printer ink and toner cartridges you need look no further, obviously! You can find ink, toner and printer accessories for all your printing needs and get rebates of up to 80%.

Our Special Back-to-School Coupon Code

All this month, we have a special offer for you parents: Get 5% off any ink and toner order this entire August. Use coupon code SUPPLIES during check out for all your purchases up to 08/31/2015 and enjoy free shipping of your order.

For those of you who enjoy DIY home improvement projects, we have some great tips.  First, you can change the layout of your furniture in any room. Sometimes, even the smallest change can make a big difference! One idea is to move the furniture away from the windows to let in more natural light. Another tip is to remove any unnecessary furniture to help make a room look bigger. Simply getting rid of clutter can also make a world of difference. A unique one is 3D printers! Did you know you can use 3D printers to add quirky and interesting touches to your home?

Currently, there's so much research and development ongoing in the 3D printing space. Hence, these machines are becoming ever more useful, capable, efficient, versatile and user friendly. While you and I may not be able to 3D print our own homes just yet, there is a lot we can create and customize with the help of 3D printers.

What you can do right now with your home 3D printers

Joshua Stellini, an artist and student at the University of Melbourne used his imagination and a 3D printer to create a unique two-in-one piece of furniture. He created a table that is also a comfy seat – a 3D table with cushiony, 3D printed seating surfaces. The device helped standardize processes and made labor simpler.

And what can you do with a home 3 D printer? Amazon has home printers like a 3D pen to create doodles in the air. They are abstract masterpieces born out of your own imagination! You can also print fabricated parts using PLA filament, a nontoxic resin made of sugar from field corn. PLA filaments can create customized 3D models of various objects like toys, models and miniatures and more with the bigger machines with better features.

You can also use scanning software to create a digital image of the object you want to create. For example, printing out a miniature of a vintage car (a nostalgic conversation starter!). Creating amusing and unusual toys for kids and grandkids is also another great idea. Another cool project is making one-of-a-kind jewelry. You can also make your own replacement parts and tools to your own required specification.

This article outlines some really cool household and home improvement items you can 3D print. For example: a wine rack, a drink dispenser, a portable combination safe, outlet protectors, unique penholders, bottle openers, coasters, wall mounts or hooks, even a shower head and so much more.

3D Printer Services

If you're ready to go the DIY route with a 3D printer, there are services that will do this for you. For instance Lowe's Innovation Labs. Lowe's brings you a simple and fun experiences to design and make items for your home. This helps you customize objects such as knobs and handles for your home – items that can be as cute, quirky or unusual as you want them to be.

For just $5 to $20, you can create unique wall prints, handles and other home improvement items. If you're willing to shell out more, there are more premium options. Like having a stainless steel, titanium and gold objects printed out to your specifications.  Lowe's printing specialists will help you choose the color, the material and the shape of the unique objects you want to create. So how about printing an out-of-production antique? Or perhaps you have the fragments of a broken object that you loved? These can be pieced together to create a 3D model for printing so you can replicate it!

Other organizations such as Singularity University Labs also helps in creating products for your business. Authentise Tech and Services is another service devoted to helping businesses find the kind of solutions they are looking for: designing and delivering 3D printing strategies and building tech to empower 3F printing and 3D design businesses.

We love to hear about home improvement stories and DIY projects that our readers share with us. If you have any to share about any DIY 3D printing projects that you were involved in at home or work, we’d love to hear about those as well!

It can be a great idea to create wall art from your own photos, particularly wedding photos. This is one of a kind, personalized wall art that is special to you. It's a home décor that you can make at home without any special equipment or knowhow. You can get great results, including vintage or distressed looking images if that is what you're looking for.  Here are some tips to get you started on creating truly memorable wedding photo canvases!

Picking the Best Photos

You likely had (or plan to have) a professional photographer to take pictures at your wedding. In that
fun wedding photos

case you probably have a great bunch of pictures to choose from. However, don’t pick only the most obvious posed pictures. Some fun ideas are: a rear view of the wedding couple, a close-up of the rings, the bridal bouquet or even the wedding shoes (one or both pairs), dad’s hand holding the bride’s as he gives her away, or a close up of the groom with his grandpa…. Pick photos that are unusual, meaningful, or which are interesting because of their angle, lighting, and so on.

You could also pick a series of photos which tell a story. You could also use stylized initial letters or dates (date of the wedding, the day that you met and so on). And don’t hesitate to add photos not related to the wedding – the bride or groom as a baby and then at the altar.

Another idea: how about creating a photo canvas out of your wedding vows? Especially, if you wrote them yourself! You could play around with textures, borders, filters, and tints (i.e. monochrome, sepia) as well. You could even break one image up into several parts, and print them out in parts, and then place them in the correct sequence on the wall to create a jigsaw like effect.

How to Make a DIY Wedding Photo Canvas

You will need:
  • Blank canvases (check out these specially-priced canvas, cloth and fabric canvases here)
  • The photos you’ve picked out (consider larger sizes or magnify one portion of a photo) in the shape of the canvas you plan to use
  • Mod Podge (matte finish)
  • Craft scissors or knife
  • Brushes (paint brush, foam brush and so on)
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Sand paper

Print out your pictures on good quality photo paper using the best quality settings on your printer. Now smooth the surface of the canvas using some sandpaper to make the Mod Podge adhere well). Coat the surface of the canvas with Mod Podge and position the photo over it carefully – make sure it is properly aligned and not askew. Let dry and set. Trim the sides of any excess using a knife or scissors. Now coat the picture with a very thin layer of matte finish Mod Podge (it may look opaque at the moment but will dry out clear, never fear). While that layer is still wet, use a spare canvas and press that down over the photo and pull away to get that canvas texture. Now let this dry again. Paint the sides of the canvas with black acrylic paint to finish.

Position your canvases on walls, doors, or other strategic locations such as the side of your staircase etc. Consider creating a collage of canvases on your wall. This can be a series that tells a story or a collection of pictures in a shape of your choice. For example, a large heart shape, one central photo with several smaller ones on the side and so on. Check out some fun, interesting ideas on Pinterest: here and here.

recycle ink and toner cartridges
There is no doubt that plastics, and their various applications, have revolutionized the way we live. It has increased our comfort and convenience manifold. Yet, it is also a fact that the disposing of plastics presents one of biggest challenges of modern living. Discarded cartridges ending up in landfills, is no solution. So what is? And how can your used cartridges help feed the poor?

Recycling and our Fundraiser

As a company we are environmentally conscious,  and are always striving to make a difference to the problem of plastic waste disposal. Our Ink Cartridge Recycling Program is the result of this. Earlier this year, we launched this program to both recycle cartridges and help raise money to feed the hungry.

We’ve been asking you to mail us your empty ink and toner cartridges. We recycle these for you by sending bulk quantities to GreenHippo.com, who pays for these cartridges. In turn, the money we collect from this recycling program goes to FoodForThePoor.org . This is a nonprofit devoted to feeding the hungry (read more about our Food for the Poor program).

What is FoodForThePoor.org?

FoodForThePoor is a nonprofit dedicated to providing food, housing, emergency relief to "the poorest of the poor".  Particularly, in the Latin American and Caribbean regions. This organization also strives to meet the physical and spiritual needs of underprivileged families. They do this by providing clean drinking water, homes, food and the opportunity to lead a better, more dignified life.

The result so far? FoodForThePoor has fed millions, built over one hundred thousand housing units, and provided $11 billion in aid. They have been key in changing many lives for the better. Please check out these inspiring and heartwarming stories from real people FoodForThePoor has helped:

Maudiel in Nicaragua lived in a shack held together with sticks, palm fronds and plastic which flood each time it rained.  Thanks to FoodForThePoor.org, Maudiel now lives in a proper home – beautiful, solid and safe for him and his entire family.

Choupette, living in Grand Boulage, Haiti had to face a daily struggle gathering water for her family. A treacherous road led to parasite and feces infested water. Choupette and her community now have their own reservoir that collects rainwater. They no longer have to struggle for water and Choupette isn’t sick all the time.

Wilson, living in Guatemala was severely malnourished at age 2. His parents barely earned enough to keep everyone fed. Wilson eventually had his stomach infested with parasites and his hair was falling out. Thanks to a stint at a Food For The Poor-supported nutritional center, Wilson is now a healthy, active little boy.

Bibi and her children lived in a zinc shack. Junick in rural Haiti lived in a crumbling, treacherous dwelling with her two children and mother. Leisha and her two little kids lived in a dilapidated coal shed in Jamaica. Their lives were also changed thanks to kind donors from the Food For The Poor organization. Which made it possible for new, safe, secure homes to be given to them.

There are countless other such stories where the efforts of Food for the Poor have managed to transform lives for the better. Literally, giving families and communities a new lease of life. We like to think that thanks to you, our readers and customers, our contribution to this nonprofit also helps to make a difference to someone out there. We hope you to send in your empty cartridges, so we can make a difference – to landfills and to the hungry people in the world!

Franklin D. Roosevelt is thought to have said, "In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved".  So as we all prepare for our Independence Day,  remember free the liberties we enjoy are something to celebrate and safeguard rather than take for granted. Now, after this serious thought, let’s get on with the festivities!

This 4th of July falls on a weekend. This makes it the perfect opportunity for some celebrations with close friends and family. Here are some ideas for get-togethers as well as some free printables for yet another memorable 4th of July celebration:

DIY Invites and Décor for Independence Day

Here's some words to put on your invitation: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Hamburgers! Or you can also go with a more standard: Join us for some fun, food and fireworks. It just depends on the type of party you're planning!  Luckily, we have some fun and free patriotic 4th of July invitation templates and printables below.

Then where are a whole lot of other printable ideas to get into the whole spirit of this patriotic observance:
  • Printable red, white and blue flags in sizes of your choice (large ones for the garden or walls, medium sizes to hand out and wave and small ones to use on top of cakes or burgers)
  • An independence day banner that can be the center piece of your party
  • Quotable quotes with an Independence Day theme (posters, wall art or even bookmark giveaways)
  • Stars and stripes coasters
  • Stars and stripes party hat
  • Tiny red, white and blue windmills
  • 4th of July paper napkins
  • Drinks décor to go on to straws and for cocktails
  • A stars and stripes paper chain for the buffet table or to use as streamers
There are some more printables and ideas for you to check out on Pinterest, here and here.

CompAndSave Printer Recycling Program
Here's a food for thought for you: about a trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year. An average American family takes home about 1,500 plastic bags a year - and about 100 billion are thrown away in the U.S. alone each year. Did you know about 12% of the 254 million tons of waste contain plastic?

So clearly, we as a community need to find a way to deal with plastic effectively. As a company whose products are made with plastic, we started an ink cartridge recycling program to support a non-profit called Food For The Poor. Stay awhile and find out if plastic ever biodegrades and how our new recycling program works to both protect our planet and feed the hungry.

Does Plastic Ever Biodegrade?

This is the scary part – we don’t know precisely how, when and even if plastic biodegrades. The plastic bags, bottles, gadgets and all the innumerable plastic objects we are surrounded with – they haven’t been around long enough for us to know how long it takes for plastic to biodegrade. The elements such as wind, rain, sun and so on seem to have little impact, though plastic does fade, crack and dry out with time. The microorganisms that breakup and biodegrade organic matter evolved to do precisely this; they don’t know how to deal with plastics.

Plastics do also break up into smaller particles, but they don’t really breakdown in the way that organic matter does. Those small particles of plastic could actually lead to even bigger problems. One study found that up to 95% of birds have some sort of plastic in their stomachs; an average of about 44 pieces per bird! As the particles become powder like, even zooplankton will swallow them. So it is actually scary how plastics can invade practically anything and are present everywhere on earth.

Why Recycling is the Best Solution

It is easy to see that plastic is inimical to the environment in many ways; insidious in ways that we are only now coming to recognize. Most items, even easily biodegradable items don’t breakdown in landfills (they are currently extracting newspapers from the 1930’s in perfect condition from landfills).

So all of us have to do whatever we can to avoid having stuff end up in landfills. Recycling is the best option. Repurpose, upcycle, reduce and reuse – these are the core values that we at CompAndSave.com hold dear; which we feel could be the mantras for all of us to live by.

Our Earth-Friendly Food For The Poor Campaign

We are encouraging all our loyal customers to send us their empty ink and toner cartridges at –
CompAndSave,
Attn: Cartridge Donations
38929 Cherry St.
Newark, CA 94560

We will recycle them for you by forwarding them to the GreenHippo.com. This is an e-waste fundraising program that helps recycle cell phones, cartridges, tablets and small electronics. When e waste in sufficient quantities is shipped to the website, payment is received by PayPal for this within 10 business days.

Whatever we get for your recycled ink and toner cartridges we send to FoodForThePoor.org. This is a nonprofit that feeds the hungry in poor communities the world over. Just $3.65 can feed a hungry child for up to a month! The nonprofit has various programs that help to feed the poor and, bring clean drinking water to underprivileged communities. The organization also helps to give families real homes (any gift is matched dollar for dollar).

We urge all our buyers to send us exhausted ink and toner cartridges in large numbers and be a part of our Feed the Hungry recycling program. Not only do you help keep plastic out of landfills, you also help feed the hungry! We welcome any comments you have about our program.
