DIY Projects Using Your Printer

If you have a printer at home there is a lot that you can use it for – these are uses for the printer that you may or may not have thought of, which can be fun and creative DIY projects for you and your family; which could also save you some money. Today we tell you how to put those ink cartridges to good use with some common and some not too common DYI ideas for your printer.

DIY Printing Projects for the Home

You probably already use your printer to print out pictures of the family – it can be fun to print out pictures to insert into frames or to create collages. You probably also use your printer to print out customized greetings, party invites, thank you notes, notes of condolence or sympathy and possibly even the gift tags that you attach to presents.

But have you ever used your printer to create interesting wall art or home décor? Did you know you can use your printer to create posters for the wall? You can find beautiful paintings on the net, scenic photos or other art that you can print (just ensure that the pictures are no subject to copyright that expressly forbids such use of the pictures, though). If you want printouts that are larger than your regular printed page, software is available online that will help break up an image into tiles – you then print out those tiles (one on each page) and assemble them to create a poster for your wall.

 You can also print on wood. Yes, that’s right; you can print on wood using a roll of waxed paper. Pick the image or images you want to print and cut out some standard sized print sheets from the roll of waxed paper. Now reverse the image (particularly important for text but you may not need to reserve it in other cases) on your computer and print it on to the waxed paper sheet. Place the printed image (printed side towards the wood) on to any wood surface. Using something stiff like a credit card, push the ink down into the wood surface. After a while, lift the paper off and you will have transferred the text, image or graphic on to the wood surface. 

 In addition you can print out place mats for your dining table – print scenic photos you like or even family photos (one personalized place mat for each person in the family!). Have these laminated and you're done! They make good casual presents as well. 

DIY Printing Projects for the Office or Home office

As you create décor for the home you can do the same for your office home office. Wall art, inspiring quotable quotes, motivational thoughts, wall posters and more can help to make your office space more attractive and cheerful. 

You could also printout your own desk calendars for the office – use photos of office employees, inspirational images or motivational thoughts as images. Labels for office shelves, files and more; even an “employee of the month” banner can be created in house for your office.

 

You can schedule these DIY printing projects for a time when you have fewer routine print jobs. Remember you should keep using your printer so that your ink cartridge doesn’t dry out and so that you get the best out of your cartridge as well as your printer.

How to Save Money on Ink Cartridges

If you’ve been keeping track of our blog you probably know already that printer ink is among the most expensive fluids in the world. It’s more expensive than fine French champagne and even perfume! So it follows that we all want to save on our toner and ink cartridge purchases.  We look at how to save money on your purchases of printing consumables. 

 

Compatible Cartridges 

Now this has to be the most obvious way to save money on ink cartridges; that you could save up to 80% when you buy our compatible ink and toner cartridges. It is a well known fact that original equipment manufacturers make their money not by selling printers but by selling ink cartridges. The prices of printers, which are a onetime expense, are kept deliberately low while the prices of cartridges, a recurring expense, are inflated.  However a quick look at the comparison between the prices of OEM and compatible cartridges will reveal just how much a difference compatible inks can make to your bottom line.

Don’t print unless you have to. Send an email, share documents on the Cloud or use any one of the many digital options available so you don’t have to take a print out.

Also unless you need to have a high quality printout, use the draft setting to do your printing. This setting saves ink and gets you quicker printouts; both of which will help you save money. Print in grayscale or black and white – this also helps you save because black ink is typically cheaper than color ink. 

Check the font type and size before hitting the print command. Some fonts use less ink than others and some fonts use up less space on a printed page, fitting more words on a single page so that you need fewer printed pages in all.
When the printer tells you it’s out of ink, don’t believe it implicitly. The accuracy of these warnings tends to wary significantly; there may actually be a lot of ink left in the cartridge when the indicator shows “low”. Keep printing until you actually find that the print quality isn’t as good as it should be.

Buy the Right Printer

Buy a printer with an Energy Star rating – this indicates that the printer is made to be efficient in terms of energy consumption. Also pick a printer that has an auto duplex setting so that the printer prints both sides of the page to save you money on printing paper.

Service and Maintenance of Your Printer

Ensure that your printer is in good working order. Use it regularly and take printouts at least once each week.

This prevents the print nozzles from getting clogged up. Performing regular maintenance checks on your printer will also ensure that you get the best out of your printer and ink cartridges, with less wastage and less money spent on repairs and so on.

Other Ways to Save Money on Ink Cartridges

Using remanufactured cartridges is another way to save money on your print consumables. This is also an eco friendly option which recycles and upcycles used cartridges to create new ones.

Buy in ink bulk. Check out some of your great bulk ink options to save big on your printing expenditure. This can make a lot of sense, particularly if you have a lot of printing requirements and if you print large volumes regularly.

Why You Should Care About 3-D Printing

 We have spoken about 3D printing and 3-D printers before; about the various applications that are possible right now, and about some amazing things that could become a reality in future. It sounds a little like something out of a Sci-Fi film that you can simply create objects – three dimensional objects with limited or full utility by the simple press of a button and yet this could well become reality in the not so distant future.

So why should you care about 3D printers? You may think that 3-D printing has no application in everyday life unless one is an inventor, but you would be wrong. These unique printers are revolutionizing various different spaces – education, medicine, space travel, fashion, technology, transport and more. 3 D printers could be at your own doorstep sooner than you think!

Amazing Things 3D Printers Can Do

Again this may seem like something from Faceoff, but surgeons are now using these machines to guide facial reconstructive surgery. The printers ‘print’ face replicas for face transplant procedures. They factor in various aspects such as the bone structure of the skull, grafts and metal plates.

They not only make the surgical procedure more accurate with better outcomes, but also can help shorten the length of the procedure itself. In a case where a person’s jaw has been destroyed and has to be reconstructed from bone sourced from other parts of the body, a 3D printer can be used. If a piece of rib or leg bone is to be used for the reconstruction, the device can help cut the bone in a highly precise manner.

Movable dinosaur robots is again a concept that seems to belong to the realm of fantasy, but scientists at Drexel University in Philadelphia have developed a way to 3D print scaled-down prehistoric skeletons of extinct creatures. These recreations are based on scans of real dinosaur fossils. Artificial muscles and tendons are grafted on to these scaled down skeletons, and there you have a smaller sized replica of an 80 ton monster!  Similarly replicas of historical figures can be recreated with the help of a 3 d printer – King Tut reincarnated, anyone?

Marine biology is another area where 3 D printing is being utilized – replicas of the predatory dragon fish are being studied in labs rather than having to dive to great depths in complete darkness using high pressure tanks.

Currently there is a Brazilian orthotics company that has been able to has use 3D printing technology to print tiny plastic replicas of fetuses still in utero; a rather unusual keepsake of pregnancy!

 

Amazing Things 3D printers Will Do In The Future 

These marvelous printers can ‘print’ biological tissue. Already a Sand Diego startup is able to create functioning liver tissue; we can infer from this that the day is not far when an entire working organ for the human body can be created using technology similar to this. Fabricated ears and prosthetic limbs could one day be created – not for human beings but also for animals. The possible applications for beloved family pets are only now being considered and explored.

3 d printers could also be producing edible products sometime in the near future. Sea scallops, cookies and banana-flavored gelatin have already been ‘printed’; perhaps a steak dinner may emerge from such a device one day. You could also be wearing shoes made from consumer grade leather that came out of a 3-d printing machine. These printers could likely limit the environmental costs associated with the farming and meat industries, experts envisage.

 3D printing has obvious applications for the car and auto sector. 3 d printing could not only create prototypes and models but actual auto parts as well. Home ware products, defense applications and weaponry, wearable tech, clothes and more can come out of these printers in future.
