Ink cartridges

Low-Cost Printers, High-Price Cartridges

You think you’re getting a great deal on a printer, and then you go to replace a cartridge and find the replacement cartridge costs more than $100. Although manufacturers sell laser printers and inkjet printers cheaply, they keep the replacement toners and inks relatively expensive. This business model is how printer manufacturers make their money.

There comes a time where you are needing to print off an important document and then you are faced with the devastating news that your ink is low. You replace the ink cartridge only to find that a few dozen pages later you are low again.

For business or personal use, ink costs can add up quickly. Luckily, we have a few tips and techniques that can help stretch your ink supply.

1. Print in Black and White

Remember the good ol' days where we would print off directions to a friend's house or a restaurant? Not only did we get the directions on paper, but they printed off in bright spunky colors. By simply updating your default settings to print only in black and white, also known as grayscale, you will aid in the conservation of the color ink cartridges for when you need it most.

2. Change the Font

By eliminating the fun font types and holding back on bolding the important text, you will keep your ink usage at a minimal.

Ecofont, developed by SPRANQ, is an "eco-friendly" font software for Outlook and Word that saves up to 50% of your ink and toner compared to standard fonts. The software is free to use and downloading is easy. Works for both Mac and Windows OS.

3. Double-Check Your Work

It's always a good rule of thumb to double (or sometimes triple) check your work for mistakes. Not only does that practice ensure that your work is the best it can be, but it also prevent reprinting which in turn saves on ink usage.

4. Select "Printer-Friendly" When Printing Directly from Web

Printing directly from webpages can result in unnecessary amounts of pages. Webpages can hold several images as well as ads that aren't useful if printed. Opt for the printer-friendly option on the webpage. If the option is unavailable, there is a bookmarklet called Print What You Like that creates a printer friendly version of the website. This tool is also available as a Chrome extension and is free to use. Not only will it omit all unnecessary images, but it will save your ink and paper from unwanted printing.

5. Turn Your Printer's 'On/Off Switch' to OFF

Unlike computers and other electronic devices, turning the printer off is something we really do not think about. One unknowing tidbit is to ensure your printer's on/off switch is turned to off. This will park and cap your ink cartridge and prevent it from drying out prematurely.

If you have any other suggestions or tips on how to save on printer ink supply, please submit them below. We'd love to hear from you!

MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printer (5th Gen)In January 2009, the BfB RapMan 3D printer became the first commercial 3D printer available for sale. Since then, the 3D printing industry has flourished, with 80,000 desktop 3D printers sold in 2013, 160,000 sold in 2014, and 275,000 in 2015.

A July 2016 report from CONTEXT, an IT market research company, forecasts the global 3D printing industry to grow to $18.4 billion in 2020. This growth largely stems from individuals like you and me entering into desktop or personal 3D printing. Chris Connery, VP for Global Analysis at CONTEXT, says, “… as generations before had to become familiar with PCs, this generation needs to learn 3D printing.”

3D Personal Printing Is No Gimmick

While you may think 3D personal printing is a fad now, there are already useful applications of 3D, such as exoskeleton hands for greater accessibility. And with 3D printers gradually making the production of items even more convenient and personalized, you would be unwise to underestimate the use of 3D printers in the future.

You can find a variety of 3D designs at MakerBot’s Thingiverse.com, the world’s largest open source 3D printing design community. Ross Maddox at LayerTrove also pulled together some great designs. Even if you don’t have technical expertise or previous experience with 3D printers, you can still create household objects, accessibility items, and much more.

Printing isn't always easy. Sometimes the printer clogs, the ink spills, or most frustrating of all, you run out of ink at the most inconvenient time. The only thing worse than running out in the middle of a project is paying the ridiculously high prices to replace your ink or toner. But what if there was a cheaper way? Well, using remanufactured inks is a great way to cut costs and print as often as you need to.

When it comes to choosing a printer for your home, the options can be overwhelming. First, you have to decide which manufacturer you want to go with. On top of that, you have to pick between numerous models. It can be intimidating to compare that many printers at once, which could lead to you not feeling confident in your purchase. So is there an easier way to decide which printer would match your needs? Of course! When choosing your new printer, start the process with a mere two choices: laser or inkjet.

technology-trends
2015 proved to be a pretty big year for advances in technology. Apple introduced the most anticipated gadget in wearable technology, the iWatch. More drones took to the skies. Apple Pay helped to increase adoption of mobile payment technology. And the most popular gift was the hoverboard (okay, so it's not exactly what "Back to the Future" promised us, but it's a step in the right direction). So what do we have to look forward to in 2016?

Increased Online Security

Companies across the globe are making sure security fixes are on top of their to-do list this year. With 2015 being a year for many notable cyber-attacks (think: Ashley Madison, Primera Blue Cross, VTech, and Experian), companies will spare no expense to tighten online security and give consumers peace of mind that their information is safe.

Virtual Reality

The day thousands have awaited so eagerly is nearly upon us. Virtual reality gaming is finally, well, a reality. With two VR devices scheduled to hit consumer shelves in 2016 (the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive), the way we interact with content is going to change dramatically. Whether you are gearing up for battle in your favorite game or exploring the world from the comfort of your home, virtual reality is going to be HUGE.

Better Mobile Payment Technology

Mobile pay has made shopping a little more convenient for consumers all over. However, it is important to keep in mind that this technology is still in the first generation among the various platforms that offer it. And while not having to ever pull out your card may seem safer, security is still very juvenile in this stage. What does this mean for you? Use caution, or use your card for now, while providers beef up security during this next year.

Widespread 3D Printing

3D printing technology has been around for quite some time, but due to the high cost of owning a printer, it hasn’t yet exploded in the consumer market. However, that is set to change in 2016. With the price of owning your own printer becoming more and more affordable, this may be the year for widespread adoption of 3D printing across business owners as well as consumers.

Smart Houses

It's not crazy to think that within a few years your house could be smarter than you. With applications moving towards automated systems that can run themselves, we will have a slew of new smart appliances that will run as efficiently as possible without your assistance.

What trends are you looking forward to watching develop this year? Let us know in the comments below!
